Lutheran Community Care Centre
The Lutheran Community Care Centre is a registered charity that provides social, developmental and spiritual services to people in the northern region of Ontario.
For over 40 years, the Care Centre has had a special focus on seniors. Our community-based Social Services for individuals and families in the Thunder Bay area offers advocacy, coordination of health care, budgeting support, supports with tasks of daily living and encouragement for greater involvement in the community.
We work to diminish of isolation of those that live alone and help seniors stay in their community-based residences. When it is time, we help seniors transition to supportive housing settings. Families too, find the transition difficult so we provide emotional support as well as information to them.
For those who do move into supportive housing, our Pastoral Care Program provides spiritual comfort and guidance to residents in eight different nursing and retirement homes. Devotional opportunities are brought to them. Individuals experiencing Alzheimer’s disease find enjoyment when familiar hymns are sung during the devotional services we coordinate each month with the help of local clergy and our volunteers. At the bedside of others, even those that cannot speak, their eyes sparkle, they watch intently and they smile when they hear music.
About 20% of the people that come to Street Reach Ministries are seniors. They are among the people who are on the fringe of society, and often dealing with precarious housing, poverty, addiction, mental illness or traumatic events in their lives. Our resource centre on Simpson Street has become their place of refuge and acceptance. Our Street Chaplain is there for encouragement and prayer and follows people as they spend time in prison, hospital or treatment clinics.
The Lutheran Community Care Centre is greatly involved with adults with a developmental disability. These individuals can range from 18 to well into their senior years. We are designated as the access point for adult developmental services for the northern region of Ontario. This service is known as Developmental Service Ontario and confirms eligibility as well as assesses the support needs of individuals.
For adults with developmental disabilities we also administer a direct funding program called “Passport” for northern Ontario. Individuals decide how to best use their funds to increase their community involvement, their level of independence and allow their natural caregivers to have a respite break.
Our case managers help adults with a developmental disability live independently in Thunder Bay and communities along the north shore of Lake Superior. The case managers support people through life’s challenges, introduce them to new opportunities so they can reach their full potential, and help them learn new skills so they can achieve their dreams and goals.
The Grand Parade celebrates the Lutheran Community Care Centre’s long history of caring for and meeting the diverse needs of seniors in our community. We have many partnerships with other service providers to enable a holistic approach to serving seniors as the individuals that they are. Our aim with this special fundraising event is to make sure we can continue to respond to the growing needs of our seniors for years to come.
